From bottomless brunch to casual beers by the beach to yum cha with tea-infused cocktails, here’s where you need to go in Perth for a Sunday session.
You may be wondering what on earth is a ‘Sunday Sesh’, but don’t worry, that’s why we’re here to break it down for you. It’s basically a catch up with some friends, usually at a venue (or a couple) where you start drinking early in the day, say 11am and finish the night off at 10pm or earlier. This is notoriously popular over Summer, where cafes may offer bottomless brunches or bars host live music of local talents. You may be thinking, hang on… isn’t work the next day or don’t people have to study? Aren’t Sundays meant for chilling?
Well, in Perth and the rest of Australia, people love to make the most of their whole weekend. And whilst wholesome activities like hikes or trips to local farmers markets are common, there’s a soft spot for a good ole’ Sunday session drink up with your mates at one of your favourite bars. Atmosphere is key, we’re talking beer gardens, happy hours and quality music… it’s all about finishing off the weekend with a bang (even if that means nursing a dreadful hangover at your 9am lecture).
If you really want to give the whole living like a local a real go, you need to check out our top 5 Sunday sessions in Perth.
#1 Ocean Beach Hotel
Location: 140 Marine Parade, Cottesloe
Ocean Beach Hotel (or OBH as the locals like the call it), is a household name when it comes to Sunday sessions. Situated right on the beach, their relaxed dress code means you can go for a quick dip in the ocean and then pop in for a couple with a towel in tow and sandy feet. You can either soak up the sun in the outdoor seating area with an ice-cold beer or get your groove on out the back on the dance floor. For vibes and good times, OBH certainly gets our tick of approval.
#2 The Cottesloe Beach Hotel
Location: 104 Marine Parade, Cottesloe
Who says Sunday sessions are just for Summer? The Cottesloe Beach Hotel offers an ideal setting all year round where you can enjoy the ultimate beachside lifestyle. With Hamptons style décor, umbrellas and lightbulb fairy lights, it’s a great venue for those of you that just want to have a relaxed catch up over cocktails and pizza. It’s on the classier side of things but hey, if you’ve just spent your Saturday night in cesspit of human sweat, you’re probably craving the breathing space of a lounge and casual sips of a bevvy.

Bowling alleys and cocktails? Need we say more? That’s right, you enjoy the luxuries of a beachside bar whilst trying your luck in the lanes with some mates. If you’re on the hunt for a locals favourite amongst young people, you need to visit The Lookout on a Sunday. Whether it’s lazy afternoon drinks in your beachwear or having a boogie as the sun goes down to a killer DJ set, it’s got it all. Also, we highly recommend the burgers (all you need is one look at the Scarborough cheese burger) and fish and chips, they’re next level!
#4 El Grotto

Tacos and Margaritas on a Sunday? Count us in! For a trendy casual setting that really picks up after nightfall that oozes cool tunes perfect for a groove, we highly recommend El Grotto. Zucchini burritos, pumpkin tacos and Tecate beers? Sold. You want to know what else? They’re also the winners of the Australian tequila bar of the year at the 2018 Australian Bar Awards, so you know you’re in good hands when you choose this little Mexican treasure on a Sunday.
